Israeli smokers

Departing Ben Gurion Airport for Athens. How’s this for catering for smokers?

Final night final night in Israel

Classic cars, Israeli style! (Included this for Chris and Gary,)

Old Italian Hospital, which is now the Ministry of Culture.

Street party and very loud band right outside our hotel. Had hoped to get an early night as we have to be up at 2am to catch our plane to Athens.

Walking the wall

Selfie with the golden dome in the background.

Damascus Gate ramp.

Harold’s Gate.

Views from the ramparts

Views of the mall where we were staying. The double tram ran past out hotel.

Over the roof tops to the golden dome of the Dome of the Rock.

Looking east.

Rampart walk in reverse direction

Finished pur visit to the old city with a final walk along the ramparts. Looking into the old city from the Jaffa Gate.

Looking back at the Jaffa Gate. The tower of David is on the left.

Looking towards the mall.

Walking the top of the wall.

Roman Cardo

In 1948 the Jewish quarter of old Jerusalem was destroyed by the Jordanian Army and left in ruins for 50 years. The area was retaken in the 1967 war and when the Jewish quarter was rebuilt in 2000, it provided an unprecedented archeological opportunity to excavated the old city under the ruins. The only map of old Jerusalem was a mosaic on a church floor in Jordan. Using this map, the old Roman City way located and excavated. Here is the map the archeologists used!

This is the main Roman Street, called the “The Cardo”, they found 7 meters under the current city.

This is a drawing of what it would have looked like in Roman times.

Views of Jerusalem from the Hurva Synagogue.

Walked around the observation deck at the base of the dome on the Hurva Synagogue. The small mosque was set up by a disgruntled Jew who converted to Islam and wanted to get back at the Jews in the Synagogue!

View over the roof tops. The Holy Sepulchre can be seen centre skyline.

Looking towards the Temple Mount, the Dome of the Rock can be clearly seen.

Hurva Synagogue.

Visited the main synagogue in Jerusalem called the Hurva Synagogue. Destroyed by the Jordanian Army when they took over old Jerusalem in 1948, it was taken by Israel in the 1967 war. The synagogue was rebuilt in 2000 to be an exact duplicate if the original.

The amazing interior taken from below and the observation balcony at the base of the dome.

Walking Jerusalem Old City.

One of the market streets from above.

Viewing the Golden Dome of the Dome of the Rock.

Bread sellers.

Church of the Redeemer.

Lion Gate (Just for Priyani!)

From the wall of Jerusalem

Went for a walk on the wall of Jerusalem today.Tower of David next to the Jaffa Gate.

View over the Tower of David down Jaffa Street where we are staying.

From the Zion Gate on the Jerusalem wall, Abbey of the Dormition and Coenaculum.

Sepulchre tourist icons

The tourist draws at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The slab of stone where Jesus’s body was laid out after crucifixion ..... supposedly!!!!

Tomb where Jesus was finally laid to rest? Supposedly!!!

Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Got up early to wander through old Jerusalem to find the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and avoid the crowds! Other people had the same idea and Jo had to que for a hour and a half to glimp the site where people believe Jesus  was finally buried ... that’s faith!  Site was a bit old and run down.

Jerusalem

Drove to Jerusalem and returned the car. Our hotel is located just outside the walls of the old city - very small room but location, location, location. Just down Yafo Street (Which is now a newly renovated mall with trams and lots of shops and cafes) is the Jaffa Gate to the old city.

Inside, streets and streets of narrow alleys lined with small shops - real tourist trap!

The wailing wall. Most unimpressive considering all the security you gave go through to get there. Just an unremarkable piece of stone wall. Just as unremarkable is the separation of males and females which says a lot about their beliefs.

Dung Gate, Old Wall and El Aqsa Mosque top left.
