Roman Cardo

In 1948 the Jewish quarter of old Jerusalem was destroyed by the Jordanian Army and left in ruins for 50 years. The area was retaken in the 1967 war and when the Jewish quarter was rebuilt in 2000, it provided an unprecedented archeological opportunity to excavated the old city under the ruins. The only map of old Jerusalem was a mosaic on a church floor in Jordan. Using this map, the old Roman City way located and excavated. Here is the map the archeologists used!

This is the main Roman Street, called the “The Cardo”, they found 7 meters under the current city.

This is a drawing of what it would have looked like in Roman times.
