Odeon of Herodes Atticus

This morning we visited the Odeon of Herodes Atticus which is a stone theatre structure located on the southwest slope of the Acropolis, Athens on the way up to the Parthenon. The building was completed in 161 AD and then renovated in 1950.

You can see the Acropolis Museum in the left upper corner.

Views from the Acropolis Museum.

The museum is at the base of the Acropolis and the views of Athens are spectacular. The is the Acropolis with the Parthenon.

Here you can see Mount Lykavittou which we walked up. Fortunately the weather was a mild 25 degrees so it was a comfortable 1.5 walk up.

Acropolis Museum

Visited the new Acropolis Museum

The Acropolis Museum is built on top of an archeological excavation of A 5th Century town.

The Acropolis Museum is all about the Parthenon (Which we are going to tomorrow)

This is what the statues looked like before the Parthenon was destroyed.

Temple of Zeus

Here we are at the Temple of Zeus.

The temple is an amazing ruin. When it was built it must have been an imposing structure.

Part of it fell down in a storm years ago

Hadrian’s gate at the exit to the site.

Descending Mount Lykavittou

Going down we decided to use the cable car for the views. No view because it was an underground train. Quick way to get down but we did it the wrong way. Should have gone up not down!

Weird building at bottom on Mount Lykavittou.

Walking to the top of Mount Lykavitou

One hour slog to the top of Mount Lykavittou but was worthwhile as the view of Athens was incredible. Jo on top with the Parthenon in the background.

View of the Parthenon from the top.

View  of the Temple of Zeus.

View of our hotel the  Zafolia.

View of the President Hotel.

Walking Athens

Left the President Hotel this morning and walked to the Zafolia Hotel Athens. This is what the streets are like in Athens.
